This is a type of ceramic steam inhaler that was invented between 1861 and 1865. The one pictured was made for Boots the Chemist, a popular UK pharmacy.
Historically, this inhaler was used to treat respiratory ailments like colds, flu, chest infections, and blocked sinuses by inhaling steam. Users could add medicinal infusions like Friar's Balsam or oils such as eucalyptus to the hot water to enhance the therapeutic effect. The design was so effective that it was one of the most widely produced and used inhalation devices of its time, and a similar version is still available today. Modern uses also include singers and performers using it to hydrate their vocal cords.
